But you were in kind of a fugue state. I remember a lot of knee slides and the garlic sauce. I learned a lot. I only saw him once in concert -- December, 1980. Thought it was at the Meadowlands but it appears to have been in Providence or CT instead. I was cracking up about your seeing him three times in a row during a Harvard semester. Must have been a fellow English major to pull that off ;-).lilygchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07691632130945783596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-80541958907577627002018-04-25T13:32:59.798-04:002018-04-25T13:32:59.798-04:00I love this so much. He was a big fan of my ex (singer/songwriter) and invited us into his dressing room after a show at Staples Center, and the three of us sat and talked for over an hour. A definite highlight of my life - along with getting pulled up onto stage to dance with him to "Dancing in the Dark."sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06365393166329207124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-40867157616293153142018-04-25T07:44:55.487-04:002018-04-25T07:44:55.487-04:00Postscript: On my actual birthday, Bruce(on a nigh...Postscript: On my actual birthday, Bruce(on a night off from Broadway), joined Michael Stipe and Patti Smith onstage at the Tribeca Film Festival after a screening of a doc about Smith.
https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2018/04/watch-bruce-springsteen-and-michael-stipe-join-pat.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=152&v=6zMMTcYEXDU
David Handelmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05899694860294565558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-90362595730105884762018-04-24T17:09:46.295-04:002018-04-24T17:09:46.295-04:00David, what a great essay. I saw him at the Bottom Line in ‘75, and at another, small-theater show soon after that, but I regret having unaccountably missed him in '78. By '84 I was happy to have checked out of the shows (those crowds), and by '88 I was thrilled to be back—for good.

Another artist I idiotically stopped going to see for several years: Bowie. Saw him in '74 and '78, but then not again till the "Glass Spider" tour. And that was it. How I wish I’d caught another couple of performances.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-24534280434155337702018-04-24T12:22:35.304-04:002018-04-24T12:22:35.304-04:00Fantastic, David! "As Bruce recapped his early years nostalgically - missing the time when life was a blank page that could go in any direction - I wouldn't say the years slipped away. Instead, they accumulated, to something more profound. The shared experience that keeps us all going in hard times." It does! Thank you for taking so much time to put into perspective the many ways in which you cared for and were kept going by this truly great artist.
Profesorahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15601224540957294379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-67245635119755929082018-04-23T23:45:29.787-04:002018-04-23T23:45:29.787-04:00Great Read Great Read Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-37467982369627474322018-04-23T23:37:25.833-04:002018-04-23T23:37:25.833-04:00I've only seen Bruce a couple of times. We saw him open the Staples Center in 1999 and my wife credits that concert with causing my unborn son to turn. And we saw him at the Wiltern for the Tom Joad tour. We got tickets (but not together) from people who left during the show. The usher refused to seat me in the correct seat and for some reason sat me in the third row next to Jason Alexander.Ron Ostrownoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8286055590040900418.post-10576512520682496392018-04-23T22:52:50.751-04:002018-04-23T22:52:50.751-04:00Beautiful.
